Exploring Montessori Math Materials and Their Impact on Math Fluency
A Qualitative Action Research Study
IntroductionDr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, revolutionized early childhood education with her scientifically-based approach. As a scientist, Montessori was deeply committed to observing children and developing educational methods based on empirical evidence. Her work was rooted in the belief that education should evolve with ongoing research and discoveries about how children learn best. This commitment to research aligns perfectly with modern educational frameworks like the "Science of Reading" and the emerging "Science of Math," which emphasize using evidence-based practices to enhance learning outcomes.
The Science of Math and MontessoriThe Montessori approach to math emphasizes hands-on learning, self-directed activity, and collaborative work. Traditional Montessori math materials, such as the Golden Beads, Stamp Game, and Bead Chains, align well with many components of the Science of Math. However, there are areas where the integration of updated, research-based methods could enhance their effectiveness. By integrating the Science of Math with traditional Montessori math materials and methods, we can build on Montessori's legacy of innovation and ensure that our teaching strategies are grounded in the most current research.
